Recording, music technology, and performance

Steve teaches recording, mixing and mastering at Oregon State University, and has taught music technology, digital arts, and engineering-meets-music camps for more than a decade.

Areas

  • Data-driven instruments. Designing interfaces where sensors, controllers, and everyday objects become expressive musical instruments. The subject of his DMA dissertation, Seven Attempts at Magic.
  • Interactive performance systems. Real-time audio and visual environments in Max/MSP, Kyma, Ableton Live, and Processing.
  • STEAM curriculum. Program design that puts music and art at the centre of science and engineering learning, from summer camps to college courses.
  • Nonprofit and program development. Graduate certificate in Nonprofit Management, University of Oregon.

Courses at Oregon State University

  • Recording Techniques I, II, and III. A three-course sequence in studio recording, from signal flow and microphone technique through multitrack sessions.
  • Bedroom Recording. Producing release-quality recordings with a laptop, an interface, and a small room.
  • Mixing & Mastering. Balancing, processing, and finishing tracks for streaming and physical release.
  • Special Topics. Rotating subjects in music technology, production, and intermedia art.
